Last time I photographed family plots I visited my Gr-Gr-Gr Grandfather Dubois Swezy. Now I know this may make me sound crazy but I had a “talk” with him. I photographed the plot, placed a light at his stone then sat down to have a talk with him and asked him who is parents were. I was half joking but part of me hoped that maybe just maybe it would help me out. I’ve been desperate for information on his family and most importantly his parents. My records as well as all my research thus far seemed to stop at him. It was like he just appeared out of no where.
Fast forward to 2 weeks ago when I decided to try just one more time on www.ancestry.com to see if I could find ANYTHING about him. Lo and behold I found this!
New York State Archives, Albany, New York; Town Clerks´ Registers of Men Who Served in the Civil War, ca 1861-1865; Collection Number: (N-Ar)13774; Box Number: 41; Roll Number: 23.
Not only that, I found this!
It lists his Father William Sweezy and his mother Mary McKee!
I nearly fainted. I still have more research to do however I know have leads. This is more than I have ever had on the Swezy line of my family tree. I instantly called my father to share the good news and then I thanked Dubois for helping me out.
Have you ever talked with your ancestors? Or better yet, have they ever “helped”?
>Here’s the follow up post to the Listening to the Past try-it my daughter earned on our last trip up to NJ.
We had a blast and it was so fun to share stories of the family and visit landmarks with my daughter and niece.
The activities we accomplished while we were there:
1) Community Stories 4) Tell Stories of the Past 2)If these Buildings Could Talk - While in NJ, my father and I shared stories of with the girls, both my mother’s side and my father’s side. Starting from when they came over to the United states, the wars they fought in and up thru the current members. It was so much fun and they had great questions. Just driving thru my hometown I was able to show my daughter where the family used to have farms and where their legacies still remain.
3) Visit the Oldest Cemetery – This may not be the absolute oldest cemetery in the town however it is definitely one of the oldest. I gave the girls the task of finding the oldest grave and off they went! We paid respect to both revolutionary war, civil war, and WWI soldiers in our family.

I had so much fun with my father and the girls. I can’t wait to go back home to NJ to do more research and take more pictures. Thanks for sharing this experience with me!

I wanted to share the gravestone of my Gr Gr Great Grandfather Dubois Swezy located in Glenwood Cemetary in Vernon, New Jersey. This line of my family seems to stop with him. I haven’t been able to locate information regarding his parents. Part of that problem stems from the change in the last name. Civil war records has his last name as Sweezey while the census has him as Swezey. The current Swezy’s in my family are the same as Dubois Swezy’s stone.
As I stated about, Dubois Swezy was in the civil war. He was part of the 56th Regiment of the New York Infantry. What fascinates me about this, and also occurred to me just last week, was that during that time he traveled from Orange County New York to the area I live in now and even further to South Carolina. I see the signs all over the area memorializing the civil war trails and battles and I can’t help but wonder if my ancestor walked the same ground I am.
Thanks for letting me share my story. I hope to one day uncover the mysteries of his family so I can continue on this part of my family tree.
>Last night I was on a roll working on my father’s side of the family. That is until I came up on my GR-GR-Grandfather, Dubois Swezy (Sweezey, Swezey, etc). This is where the line seems to stop. I have all of his civil war records showing three, yes three! variations of his last name but if I want to know who his mother is, nope. Father, nope. Nothing.
I know I’m not the only one who is stuck. I’ve been in contact with Bob at www.sweezey.com and he is stuck in a similar place. Looks like I’ll be researching a bit in Orange County, New York when I go home this summer.
Until then, I’ll leave you all with this.
