I added a new roadblock to my Snook page.
Meet Edith Snook nee Ackerman. She is my Gr – Gr – grandmother on my father’s side. This picture also shows my Gr – Gr – Grandfather Fred Snook.
What I’m trying to find out is when did Edith die and where is she buried. I’m sure the answers are staring me in the face but I can’t find them at this time. What I do know is that she last shows up on the 1930 census. Also, Fred died in 1942 and was buried in Newton Cemetery, Newton New Jersey. On my to do list for the next trip to NJ is to visit that cemetery to see if she is there but not listed on FindaGrave or other databases.
A great friend of mine started scrapbooking her family recipes as part of her genealogy research and I thought that was a wonderful idea. Maybe one day I can create a family cookbook to pass on.
Since it’s fall and a great time of year to pick apples, I wanted to share this recipe with you.
Dutch Apple Cake
Transcribed from my grandmother’s written recipe
3 C flour
6 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
8 tbsp crisco
6 tbsp sugar
Sift all together. Add 2/3 C milk to 2 beaten eggs. Add to flour mixture. Spread in 2 pie tins. Cover with sliced apples or any fruit. Put sugar and cinnamon on top and bits of butter. Bake 25-30 minutes. Serve with lemon sauce.
Enjoy!
Here’s a great challenge from Randy over at Genea-Musings.
Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to:
1) If you have your family tree research in a Genealogy Management Program (GMP), whether a computer software program or an online family tree, figure out how to find how many persons, places, sources, etc. are in your database (hint: the Help button is your friend!).
2) Tell us which GMP you use, and how many persons, places, sources, etc. are in your database(s) today in a blog post of your own, in a comment to this blog post, or in a Facebook status or Google+ stream comment.
Here’s mine from Ancestry.com
A few weeks ago I found this frame at my local Target on clearance and had to pick it up.
I made a corner of my bedroom into an office area and have been trying to decorate the space. I use the office nook for both homework and genealogy work. This picture will fit perfectly on the wall above my monitor. The hard part for me though is trying to figure out what pictures to put in it. Who would have thought I’d have this trouble!
Whose pictures would YOU put in a frame like this?
Alvaretta Clouse (1853-1938)
This was a correction in my notes. When my grandmother gave me a book of photos she tried her best to label them. This picture she had labeled as my Grandmother Lena Snook’s sister who is also Alvaretta Snook. The problem with that would be Lena’s sister died in 1905 at the age of 19. The reason of her death is unknown at this time however the Alvaretta in this photo is definitely not 19. I have since updated my family’s notes and will be researching the reason of 19 year old Alvaretta’s death.
I only have a month left of summer vacation before I head back to class. I’ve gotten a lot of research done this summer but I do have some things that I wanted to get done that I have not. I figured the best way for me to stay on track from here on out was to have monthly goals set up.
First installment! August Goals
- Scan more pictures in from the family photo album
- Finalize DAR paperwork
- find seminars or workshops for genealogy either online or locally
- Switch gears and work on my husband’s family
Not too many but I wanted them to be obtainable.
What are your goals?
Fred Snook (Gr Gr Grandfather) with Betty, June, and Vivian. They are cousins but I’m not sure who the parents of Betty and June are.
Frederick Snook 1866-1942
Vivian Snook 1927 – ? (father: John C Snook. Mother: Anna M)
My curiosity gets me every time with this picture. For instance, What is that painting behind them? Who is that? Is it a random painting or a family member? Also, Who is that picture behind Fred of? No one knows in my family but I always stare at it wondering.
