About Lis

Three years ago, Lis started an adventure that has led to finding many lost and unknown relatives. It all started with a simple question and now has turned into a great passion.

Currently Lis is working on her family history with the majority of family roots in Northwestern New Jersey. She is also in the process of writing a book documenting her family and a cookbook filled with recipes passed down through generations.

Lis Kemple is a stay at home mom to an 8 year old daughter and a full time accounting student set to graduate spring of 2012. Born and raised in New Jersey but now Lis resides in Hampton Roads, Virginia. With an area rich in history it's a great inspiration for genealogy research.

Recipe #4

Chocolate Cake & Fudge Frosting

Transcribed from the above recipe as written by my grandmother.  This recipe was originally from Jessie Runnalls.

Mix together 1 cup sugar and 1 cup salad dressing or mayonnaise. Add 2 teaspoons milk.  Last, add 2 1/4 cups flour, 2 teaspoons baking soda, and 3 tablespoons cocoa.  Be sure to sift the flour, cocoa and baking soda all together.  mix well.  Bake about 35 minutes in 375* oven or until toothpick comes out clean.  Be sure to mix just as recipe is given, this cake always turns out good.  Some lady won a prize on this cake.

Fudge Frosting

Mix 1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa with 1 teaspoon vanilla, 1 pinch of salt, and 3 tablespoons water until smooth in top of double boiler.  add 1/2 can condensed milk and mix well.  Cook over hot water until thick, stir once in a while as it cooks.  When frosting is cold beat in 1 teaspoon Crisco or similar shortening, heat until fluffy.  Spread on cake.  You can use butter in frosting if you wish.

I remember my gram making this cake…. it was her mayonnaise cake!  I didn’t realize I had the recipe for it until I was browsing this morning in her recipe box.

Enjoy!
